Scott Bass Board Member

Scott Bass, Surfing Heritage Foundation Board Member, has been surfing since 1978; a member of the Swamis Surfing Association; Online Editor at SURFER magazine for 10 years; Executive Director of the Sacred Craft Consumer Surf Expo; host/producer of "Down The Line" surf talk radio in San Diego on XTRA Sports 1360AM; Writer & co-Director of the award winning documentary film Between The Lines. Married to beautiful wife Katrina Bass; two children and living in Encinitas, CA, Scott can be found on any given day, riding everything from short to long to stand up paddle boards.

Steve Blank Board Member

Steve Blank, Surfing Heritage Foundation Board Member, is the Director of Development of the Surfrider Foundation where he manages all fundraising efforts for the organization. Steve was born and raised in San Diego and has spent all but seven years of his life there. He grew up riding the waves and diving the waters off SoCal and still spends nearly all of his free time outdoors - surfing, skiing, golfing, sailing, fishing and hiking. He is a member of the Board of Earthshare and is also a member of the Executive Committee and past Chair of the Moores UCSD Cancer Center Luau & Longboard Invitational. Steve received his B.A. in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and his Masters in International Business Management from the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) at UC San Diego. He currently lives in North County San Diego with his wife and their two children.

Scott Griffiths Board Member

W. Scott Griffiths, Surfing Heritage Foundation Board Member, is currently CEO of 18/8, a chain of fine men’s salons as well as Boombang Ventures, the venture division of an international brand strategy and product design firm. Scott’s passion has always centered around surfing and surf culture. In 1990, he created a microbrewery call Rhino Chasers, inspired by Greg Noll and the big wave riders. In 2006, Scott led the financing and joined the Board for H2OAudio, a firm that designs waterproof housing for iPods. In 2007, he led the financing and joined the Board for Outside Labs, a leader in skincare and suncare products for surfers and athletes. Mr. Griffiths is also an ongoing instructor at The Art Center College of Design where he teaches advanced product designers how to take product concepts and develop go-to-market strategies.

Founder, Dick Metz has supplied the vision for the SHF and the initial funding. Central to the mission, Dick is donating his extensive surfboard collection, and bequeathed his estate to the Foundation. Dick, who grew up in Laguna Beach as a buddy of such notables as Hobie Alter, Reynolds Yater, and Hevs McClelland, is himself a pioneering figure in our sport and industry. As the driving force behind Surfline Hawaii and the Hobie Sports retail chain, and as the traveling surfer who cross-pollinated a fledgling South African surf scene with Hobie and Gordon Clark in California, and suggested to Bruce Brown that he film for “The Endless Summer” in South Africa, Metz has changed the course of surf history. Now, his goal is to preserve it.

Co-Founder, Spencer Croul grew up surfing in Newport Beach, California in the early 1970’s, bicycling to the beach with surfboard in tow. A San Diego State University graduate in Recreation Administration Management, he earned his Associate of Arts degree at Orange Coast College after graduating from Newport Harbor High School in 1974. He worked 15 years in the private sector as a foam packaging designer and later in the family paint manufacturing business before finding and pursuing his passion as a Surf Culture Preservationist. Bringing “Foundation” management experience to the Surfing Heritage Foundation, he also serves on the board of his family’s Foundation. He has amassed his own private collection of historical surfing artifacts, and brings not only his collection to the Surfing Heritage Foundation but also his vast knowledge in surfing collectibles and surfing history. He presently resides on Lido Island in California, and continues to surf whenever possible.

Rent Our Photo Studio

Our museum grade photo studio is the ideal place to document a surfboard. With two 16-foot-tall lightboxes, the soft lighting clearly shows the curvature of the rails and also the rocker of the board, while minimizing the glare normally associated with shooting a surfboard's shiny surface.

Designed by legendary surf photographer Art Brewer, this state-of-the-art facility has been used for thousands of photographs by both surfboard collectors and shapers.

Rent the SHF photo studio and bring your own camera or hire our in-house photographers to handle the shoot for you. We use Hasselblad cameras and scanners to capture details not currently available with 35mm digital cameras. With either option, we offer half and full day rates.

Bill Blackburn President Emeritus

Bill Blackburn, President Emeritus of Surfing Heritage Foundation, started surfing in 1950 and comes from a family that spent nearly 40 years at San O. (There are now four generations of Blackburns that surf.) Bill is married, has three grandchildren, attained a degree in history from Stanford in 1965. He worked for Dean Witter & Co. until 1973, joined the family business located in Oceanside in 1973 and moved to Laguna Beach where he still lives. Bill owned and operated Hobie Sunglasses (purchased from Hobie in 1989) from 1989- 1996. He currently spends most of his free time surfing ’Nofre and skiing/fly fishing in Idaho or Colorado.
